EDSA Shrine will be the venue of the mass protest
Filipinos are demanding the abolition of Pork Barrel
Call for "EDSA Tayo" protest goes viral in Social Networking sites
While Americans will remember the victims of the Twin Towers tradegy on September 11, Filipinos will push President Aquino to abolish PDAF
As part of the series of mass protests dubbed as "Million People March", which calls for the abolition of the Priority Development Assistance Fund also referred to as "Pork Barrel" system, another netizens protest will be staged in the famous landmark along the historic Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA).
The second people assembly dubbed as "EDSA Tayo" is now circulating in social media (mainly on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram). The second protest, which will be held in EDSA shrine in Ortigas, is scheduled to happen this coming September 11. The netizens' second demonstration has reportedly gained an overwhelming support from various individuals and groups. Even celebrities Nora Aunor, Anne Curtis, Freddie Aguilar, Kuh Ledesma, and Megan Young made their confirmation to join the protest to push the government in scrapping the pork barrel.
In an interview with Bandila, Nora Aunor said "Ako po handa ako makipaglaban tungkol dyan...sasama talaga ako dyan." The veteran actress added, "Ang aasikasuhin ng mga politicians na yan ang mga mamamayan na naghihirap."
Manila Bulletin also posted the standpoints of the other local celebrities.
“Dapat mawala na po ’yung mga nagnanakaw ng pork barrel, at hindi nila ginagamit sa mga taong bayan,” Freddie Aguilar said. While Ledesma stated, “I hope the voice of the people win. Andaming pera ng Pilipinas actually, kaya lang, sa’n napupunta? Hindi tayo mahirap.”
Meanwhile, Anne Curtis, who has more than five million followers continues to utilize her influence on Twitter by actively retweeting and posting updates about the issue.
“I believe in freedom of speech. Anyone that wants to share how they feel and believe, they have the right to,” Anne said. “It’s our country, and it’s our people that we have to protect as well, so I felt that even as much as I don’t want to meddle with politics, as a citizen and as a Filipino I felt that we have a right,” she added.
The multi-billion PDAF issue is centered on the notorious businesswoman-Janet Napoles, who recently surrendered to authorities through the office of the President following Malacañang's declaration of a Php10-million bounty for her arrest.
Few weeks back, netizens took to social media to express their dismay at the pork barrel system which is used for corruption. From a simple statement of dissatisfaction through their individual Facebook wall status, thousands of internet users came up with the idea of going out to the streets to support the abolition of PDAF. The said move apparently pressured President Ninoy Aquino and prompted him to call a press conference three days before the netizens' protest. In the government-owned television network, PTV, the President made an official statement regarding his plan of "changing" the pork barrel allocation and its project implementation procedures. However, in the live broadcast Aquino did not mention a proposal to abolish the pork barrel itself. Hence, it did not stop the netizens in pursuing its planned protest in Luneta park on Monday, August 26, 2013. In that event, protesters also found out a questionable Php7.8 million flagpole project in the national landmark.
