World War II veteran (Knudson) Jailed for lack of Money to Repair his Jewelry Shop Business
A shocking news hits the headlines of various news outlets in the United States after an 88-year-old World War II veteran was placed behind bars for lack of money to do the required repairs to his jewelry store business.
Kenneth Knudson, owner of a jewelry store in Horton, Kansas appeared in court on December 23. The war veteran told the judge that his business is facing financial struggle and could not afford the expensive repair costs. He also added that the beauty salon he owns next door is barely keeping him and his wife.
"I don’t feel like I committed a crime," he said. "I can understand the city being concerned about vacant houses and other places in need of repair. But the crime didn’t fit the punishment in this case."

The city of Horton, Kansas offered to do the repair work for $10,000 dollars and apply it to his taxes but apparently the war veteran insisted that he can't afford to pay the amount. The judge then gave the war veteran a fine of $100 dollars and sent Knudson to jail for one night. He is also facing a $500 dollar fine if he fails to have the work done before his next court appearance later this month.
According to the state of Kansas, the jewelry shop of the the 88-year-old war veteran is deemed a public hazard zone and needs immediate updates.
“There are crumbling bricks and a large crack – that could pose a hazard. […] If we ignore the laws, then that creates a liability," said Horton Police Chief John Calhoon.
Meanwhile, several building contractors offered to do the repairs for little or no charge after knowing the financial challenges that the 88-year-old war veteran is currently facing. (foxnews)
