Marcos Maidana with a Huge upset over WBA Welterweight Champion Adrien Broner
Marcos Maidana was able to pull off an upset win against Adrien Broner on Saturday night, December 14 in Alamodome San Antonio, Texas.
In what could be a late candidate for 2013’s Upset of the Year, Marcos Maidana found a solution to Adrien “The Problem “ Broner by securing a unanimous decision which gave Broner his first career loss and let Maidana capture the WBA Welterweight title. Maidana tried to rough Broner up from the beginning, pummeling Broner in the first round and bloodying his face, knocking Broner down in the second round and again in the eighth, and taking a unanimous decision that gave Broner his first professional loss.
Adrien Broner came in tonight with three wins in his career that were also tough to call and could’ve given him his first loss. Tonight, he officially lost for the first time, as Marcos Maidana knocked him down him twice, outworked him all night, and clearly won at the Alamodome.
Judge Levi Martinez had Maidana winning 117-109, giving him 10 of the 12 rounds. Nelson Vazquez had it 116-109, giving Maidana nine rounds. And Stanley Christoudolou had it 115-110, giving Maidana eight rounds.
Maidana had fought other quality opponents before, and had even beaten a couple. Yet he hadn’t ever truly been on top of the sport in the way that Broner has been.
Broner's has been pushed and marketed for years, and he’s become an antihero who people either watch, hoping he wins, or they watch, hoping he loses.
Maidana landed 269 of 964 punches, including 231 of 663 power shots, according to CompuBox. He hit Broner to the body 101 times. Broner, meanwhile, hit 149 of 400, including 122 of 292 power punches.
Broner, 24, of Cincinnati, now fell to 27-1 (22 KOs)while Maidana, 30, of Argentina, is now 35-3 (31 KOs).
Last night, Maidana proved that Broner is no Mayweather ( as we have seen Broner trying to imitate Maywether and claiming that Floyd’s torch will be passed on to him ) . And that no boxer is afraid of him, Rios, Guerrero, and Thurman chased him to land a fight against him as well as Paulie Malignaggi wanting to have a rematch against him.
