University of the Philippines Students won Kaspersky Lab International IT Security Competition
Little did you know that during the series of website defacement by Team #Anonymous and #PrivateX, a group of Filipino students emerged as top winner in the global cup of Kaspersky Lab’s annual international conference dubbed ‘IT Security for the Next Generation’. The UP students bested the representative from Germany who placed second and the entry from USA, which bagged the third place.
UP students, Joshua Arvin Lat and co-authors Kevin Charles Atienza & Rod Xavier Bondoc won for the research paper “SOUL System: Secure Online USB Login System” and bagged 1,500 euros. It recommended a secure online authentication system involving a two-factor authentication scheme using a password and an ordinary USB flash drive as a security token.
As part of his prize, Lat was invited to be a part of the program committee for the next year’s competition.
The global cup, held last May 11 to 13 at the prestigious Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, pooled together the top student
competitors from the regional rounds in North America, Europe, Russia and the Commonwealth Independent States and from the Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
"We are very happy that our undergraduate research paper got first place. We did not expect it would stand a chance against those of post-graduate students' papers from all over the world," Lat said.
This is the first time the Philippines has joined the annual conference.

Comments:
I've read various negative comments on the web criticizing the "REAL & TRUE" capabilities of pinoy hackers. So to those people out there
this one is a living proof that Filipinos aren't really far behind. And personally I don't have any doubts regarding the skills of our
local hackers who initiated the retaliation to China's attack. I am not challenging these guys to be a black hat for sure Joshua Arvin
Lat knows his direction(white hat).
The photo below shows their reward!
DiversityHuman.com congratulates the entire UP contingent and we want more Filipino winners on any global IT competition.
