IBM donates Super Computer to PAGASA for accurate Weather Forecast
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will soon have an IBM “super computer” which will be installed in the Philippine Weather Agency.
According to DOST officials, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reportedly acquired a supercomputer through a donation effort of IBM international. The computing machine is expected to improve weather forecasting and effectively predict natural disasters due to climate change through the use of advance weather modeling software to consolidate weather sensors nationwide.
PAGASA has been blamed for many inaccurate weather forecasts but with the help of the IBM supercomputer, such errors will be eliminated and a reliable forecast can be easily made in any part of the country. The IBM computer will help weathermen to have an extended forecast--from three days to seven, giving people more time to prepare for incoming storms, monsoons and other weather disturbances.
The donated IBM supercomputer, which will arrive in September, shall aid DOST to prepare better analysis on the impact of climate change by processing numerical information to predict the weather outlook of the country in the next five to 10 years. Such in-depth analysis will benefit local farmers to identify the proper time to plant. Aside from the super computer, DOST would also install five more Doppler radars (making a total of 15 radars) in strategic areas to help weathermen measure the amount of rainfall of an incoming typhoon. - PhilStar news
DOST is also set to launch Project MOSES or Monitoring and Operating System for Emergency Services on July 23, 2013 for hazard monitoring and evacuation assistance.
