PBA import Jamelle Cornley Punched A Police officer, JAILED
Jamelle Cornley, a former PBA import, could be spending the long Holy Week break behind bars for allegedly punching a police officer inside the Sir William's Hotel in Timog Avenue, Quezon City.
Jamelle Cornley is facing multiple charges, including malicious mischief, direct assault, resisting arrest and disrespect for persons of authority.
Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo said Cornley’s case may be turned over to the PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, but noted that because of the long holiday, Cornley may have to spend the next few days in jail.
Reports said Cornley was the one who called for police assistance after he was allegedly robbed by three women of around P60,000.
He has denied punching PO2 Armando Lazatin, who is now in stable condition at the East Avenue Medical Center.
The former import said he will not file counter-charges against the police, and that he only wants to get his money back.
"They can file whatever they want, but we know the truth… I did not hit or push him enough to hurt him… The police had no reason to put his hand on me. I did not hurt him. I did not do anything to him," he said.
"The police can say whatever they want. All I know is this: I have never assaulted an officer. I have never been in jail before. I have no criminal record in the United States or anywhere else,” he added.
The alleged assault on a police officer is the latest incident involving PBA imports who have been behaving badly.
Petron import Renaldo Balkman was recently banned from the league after choking a teammate during a game.
GlobalPort import Walter Sharpe was sent home after he was photographed sleeping in a parking lot after an alleged drinking binge.
