Sophia Coquilla Murder Case: Two Teens Arrested Within 24 Hours of Gruesome Tagum Killing
In a swift and dramatic turn of events, police have arrested two teenage suspects in connection with the brutal murder of 21-year-old UP Manila student Sophia Coquilla, whose lifeless body was found in her bedroom on July 9, bearing 38 stab wounds. The crime scene—her family’s home—revealed grim evidence, including a dumbbell and a grasscutter used as murder weapons.
Fast-Tracked Investigation and Arrest
Just a day after the crime, law enforcement, led by Police Colonel Alexander Serrano, Jr., raided a boarding house in the city early on July 10. The operation, backed by the Davao del Norte Provincial Police and Tagum City Police, resulted in the seizure of Sophia’s stolen belongings:
-
Apple laptop
-
iPad
-
Damaged iPhone
-
Two wristwatches
Authorities also recovered blood-stained knives believed to be involved in the crime—a butterfly knife and a kitchen knife. A witness reportedly directed investigators to the suspects, aiding in the timely arrest.
Manhunt Continues and Legal Action Underway
While two suspects are now in custody at the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD), police are actively pursuing two others believed to be involved. All recovered evidence is undergoing documentation by the General Investigation Section.
Col. Serrano expressed firm resolve in a public statement: “This operation is a clear demonstration of DNPPO’s swift and unwavering commitment to justice. We will not rest until all those responsible are held accountable.”
Victim’s Family and Community Impact
Sophia is the niece of Tagum City Councilor Engr. Agripino “Jun” Coquilla, Jr. Her tragic death has rattled the community and sparked outrage on social media. Authorities have classified the case as robbery with homicide, underscoring the violent and opportunistic nature of the crime.
